Dr Jessica Aszodi is specialist in voice and embodiment methods with 20 years experience performing and teaching around the world. Jess’ vocal studio welcomes individual students from backgrounds in theatre, instrumental music, dance, and somatics practitioners, as well as hobbyists and experienced singers. In addition to teaching voice in the conventional sense, Jess teaches group classes in a holistic style of trauma-informed vocal embodiment that is the result of research and practice into a broad range of bodied modalities. From her operatic background Jess passes on to her students a commitment to finding and holding power, and making ourselves bodies in the habit of being present, resonant and expressive. These classes are also influenced by study in vocal physiology and mechanics, artistic research, classical & experimental music, Feldenkrais technique, somatic integration techniques, yoga, Taoist energy and breath work, and queer, feminist approaches to sensory communication and consent practices. Jess is excited to announce she’s currently offering small group glasses, workshops and vocal coaching at her own studio

GROUP CLASSES

Somatic choir

Like a yoga class, with added mindful breathwork, movement, and singing as a group.

A co-regulation choir for folks who want to open their voices, learn cool stuff about their body, find greater freedom and ease in vocal communication, and most importantly: sing together.

Next class: Thursdays in October 7-9pm

Classes start with mindful movement, meditation and simple vocalisations. In the second half of the class we will work on simple pieces for group voices. These pieces are influenced by Deep Listening and the 20th century experimental music tradition. No preparation, skill or prior knowledge is necessary. October rehearsals will work towards an event on October 25th, where the somatic choir will be invited to intervene in a performance at Extrasensory.

Doors are at 6:30. Everyone is invited to arrive early and stay late. This is also a social gathering.

What to expect:

🫁 An experience that’s somewhere between a choir, a yoga class, and a psychosomatic vocal gym.

🧶 A supportive group, where trust and consent create a safe and nurturing container.

🐾 Breathing into parts of yourself you did not imagine…

🔥 Flow and fire

💜 Connection. Grounding. Purgation.

Singing in groups has enormous psychological, social, and physical benefits. Societies throughout human history have placed deeply embodied vocal practices at the center of their rituals and rights of passage. These classes work toward bringing our voices back into our bodies and our bodies back into our voices. We will project ourselves through voice into shared space: attuning, opening, emptying, grieving, soothing and co-regulating. This is a class designed to open and expand what we think we know about our voices.

PRIVATE CLASSES

Jess also offers singing lessons in the traditional sense. She works with “humans” not just singers or professional voice users. She’s particularly interested in coaching new and challenging material & with aiding makers developing their own work, but will also work with talented young folk if the fit is right.
